Hiscox, Harlow and Van Horn lead Cardinals over the weekend.

Sophomore 170-pounder Jacob Hiscox  followed a 2-0 night Thursday at Ranier with a second-place finish at the Molalla Invitational Saturday for the Cardinal wrestling team.  Hiscox downed Clatskanie’s Adam McMillan in 1:19 before overcoming a first-period slam against Ranier’s Dorian Graff to pin him in 3:54.  On Saturday, Hiscox, who evened his record at 15-15, pinned Cody Reinecker of Molalla in 34 seconds and fell to Luke Aterbery of Mountain View in the finals for a runner-up finish.

Joining Hiscox with a second-place finish at Molalla was sophomore Dax Harlow at 160.  Harlow pinned Scott Germany of Colton in 2:34, before pinning Gareth Haskins of Yamhill-Carlton in 1:58 in the semifinals and falling to Clay Kemper of Banks in the finals.  On Thursday, Harlow took a forfeit against Clatskanie and was pinned by Will Rose of Ranier in 3:57.

Junior David Van Horn (138), accepted a forfeit against Ranier and earned a technical fall against Clatskanie’s Lynn Siltala 17-0 on Thursday.  At Molalla, he overcame a first-round loss to Brandon Anderson of Yamhill-Carlton and wrestled back to finish fourth.   Overall he went 2-2 on the day, and 4-2 over the two events.

Freshman Cody Lee went 1-4 over the two days at 152 and 160.  His win avenged a loss to Colton’s Scott Germany two weeks ago in a 7-6 thriller in the consolation bracket at Molalla.

Meanwhile, sophomore Zack Murphy (126) was 1-3 at Ranier and Molalla, while Sophomore Robert Maul (195) was 0-4.  Junior Garrett Anderson (182) and freshman Katie Mealey (106) were 0-2 at Ranier but did not compete at Molalla.

This past week has been a very good one for our boys basketball team. On Tuesday we traveled down to Warrenton to play the Warriors. We have not won down there for many years. But on Tuesday night that changed as we battled to a 55-38 win. Trailing for much of the first half, the Cards came back late in the second quarter and went into the locker room with a 24-21 lead thanks to a 3 pointer at the buzzer by Isaac Noles. Corbett dominated much of the second half, especially the 4th Quarter where the Cards held Warrenton to 2 points. Scoring leaders were Oliver Tymoshuk and Alex Cicerich with 15 each, followed by Noles and Joe Deibert with 10 each.

On Friday, we hosted Catlin Gable in our annual retro-cheer night. The larger than normal croud was treated to a wall to wall win by Corbett, 64-39. The game featured a dominating performance by senior Joe Deibert with 13 rebounds and 14 assists. He continually found teammates open and delivered with great passes.  Isaac Noles was the recipient of several of those passes and led the Cards in scoring with 16 pts. Oliver Tymoshuk had 11, Alex Cicerich 9 and Josh Hooley 8. The next night on Saturday, we traveled to Rainier to play the Columbians. Rainier was in first place in our league with only 1 loss, to us, back on January 5th. We jumped out to an 11-4 lead after one quarter and the lead stayed about the same until 1 minute to go in the game. That is when Rainier roared back from a 9 point deficit to cut the lead to 1 with 3.9 seconds in the game. The Cards were fouled, but after missing a free throw, Rainier had one chance with a 3/4 court heave, but the shot missed badly and the Cards had beaten the league leaders in their own house!  Oliver Tymoshuk led the scoring with 15, Joe Deibert had 12, and everyone else gave great efforts in the team win. It was a great week, and Corbett is in position to finish strong, with league playoffs just around the corner.

What happens when Corbett middle school girls’ varsity basketball team is pitted against the 2010-11 league champions in a gym where the bleachers are full of Corbett fans?  You get one ROCK’N ball game!

This was going to be a busy week any way with three games but with one of those games against Oregon Episcopal School (OES), the girls had to be on their game.  OES is always a tough team and we are always tested when we play them and this time wasn’t going to be any different.  It started slow with both teams struggling to get into a rhythm.  Eventually OES was able to find theirs and pull out to a 10-0 lead which could be disheartening but didn’t seem to faze the Cards.  Sticking to their game plan of denial defense, the posts shut down the inside and forced OES to shoot from the outside.  Eventually the Cards got on the board and began to chip away at the lead.  Throughout the game, the Cards continued to demonstrate their tough 2-3 defense and stay within sight of OES.  A few times it looked like OES would get on a roll and run away with the game, but the cards never gave up.

The end of the 3rd quarter found the Cards down 17 to 27 but there was a determination in the Cards huddle.  If they were going to win this game they had to turn up the pressure on defense and start making their shots.  It wasn’t only the team sensing opportunity; the bleachers full of Boosters began to rumble.  The girls knew this was the time and began their end-game.  A few steals and fast breaks and things were falling in place.  With every basket, the bleacher shook and the walls trembled from the cheering.  The girls were coming alive with every shout and stomp of the crowd.  Pretty quickly the Cards pulled within 7 or 8 points and the now the tide was changing.  With two minutes left in the game, the cards had pulled within 5 points and started a 3-man pressure defense that would prove to be the undoing of reigning champions.  The last two minutes saw the Cards score 4 points from steals and the whole gym reverberating with chanting, shouting and stomping.  With 30 seconds remaining and the Cards trailing by 1 point, OES brings the ball down under heavy defense and tries to set up a half court stall.  At 10 seconds, Kadyn Jones fouls on the ball setting up 1-on-1 shot for OES.  The shooter misses the shot and the whole gym is rocking.  Morgan Bucher claims the rebound and flashes to the wing and into traffic but with a quick pass to mid-court she’s able to get the ball to Rhiley Fritz who turns up court but is quickly double teamed.  Knowing they have about 5 seconds left, Rhiley fights through the double team and is tripped up.  On her way down she is able to get the ball off to Courtney Mitchell who had found her way to right wing.  With 3 seconds left, Courtney takes two steps inside the three point line at about 4-oclock.  The bleachers, the coach and all time stood still as Courtney squares up to the basket and lets fly a jump shot……..

If you haven’t been to a middle school basketball game, you may not know what it’s like watching the ball float through the air, and bank off the backboard into the basket with only two seconds left.  The fans used the last two seconds of the game to generate a roar that matched the ferocity of the wind that Corbett is known for but this time it blew through the whole gym into a thronging, cheering mess with coaches, players and parents high fiving, chest bumping and hugging.  Corbett had won with a shot at the last second that I think all the players will remember and especially that one girl who got to experience the once in a life time shot that we all dream about.
